  • Carlos Alberto, Jaap Stam and Eduardo Romero.

The Brazilians have been fortunate to have had a number of talented footballers and few more so than Carlos Alberto.

Celebrating his 72nd birthday today, Alberto is widely considered as one of the best defenders of all time.

One of his best career moments came in the 1970 World Cup where he not only captained Brazil to glory but also scored the fourth goal in the 4-1 final victory over Italy. That strike is now considered as one of the greatest goals with a total of eight outfield players involved in the build-up.

At club level, he won numerous titles with Fluminense, Santos and New York Cosmos, while he was also inducted into the Brazilian Football Museum Hall of Fame, and the U.S. National Soccer Hall of Fame.

After retirement, he tried his luck at coaching with spells at different clubs including Flamengo, Corinthians and Oman.
