Colombian international Ivan Cordoba has cemented his name in the annals of Serie A history as one of its most characteristic veteran defenders.

Turning 40 years of age, the stalwart centre-back impressed with spells at Atletico Nacional and San Lorenzo before European clubs got wind of his defensive prowess.

After rejecting Real Madrid’s offer, he instead opted to join Inter in 2000 and forged a formidable backline partnership alongside Italy 2006 World Cup winner Marco Materazzi.

While traditional centre-backs were certainly taller, Cordoba was known for his athleticism and acrobatic jumps, often hitting the back of the net from set-pieces. His exploits as a versatile defender earned him the right to play as a wing-back when called upon.

With the Milanese club, Cordoba won five Serie A championships, four Coppa Italias, one UEFA Champions League and one FIFA Club World Cup.
