    TOP STORY

Luis Enrique could not fault Spain’s attitude as they produced a superb display to thrash World Cup finalists Croatia 6-0 in Elche.

Marco Asensio scored one, saw another strike rebound off the crossbar and go in off the goalkeeper and set up three second-half goals as La Roja took firm control of Group A4 of the UEFA Nations League.

    FOOTBALL

Gareth Southgate was pleased to hear voices raised in the England dressing room as “stern words” at half-time against Switzerland helped deliver a first victory in four games.

England were at risk of sinking to their worst ever sequence of defeats having lost their World Cup semi-final to Croatia, a third-place play-off to Belgium and Saturday’s Nations League date with Spain.

In other news, a Lionel Messi-less Argentina were forced to settle for a goalless draw against Colombia in New Jersey.

Both teams arrived off the back of friendly wins at the weekend as they attempt to shake off World Cup hangovers in the absence of major stars.

    CRICKET

James Anderson took his last opportunity of The Oval Test to claim a famous piece of history as he completed England’s 118-run victory by becoming the world’s most successful pace bowler ever.

Anderson had laboured in vain throughout the final day of the Test summer, but was still going strong deep into the evening and clean-bowled India tailender Mohammed Shami to conclude England’s 4-1 series success.
