    TOP STORY

Gareth Southgate was frustrated by the result but not his side’s performance as England ignored the eerie backdrop to draw with Croatia in the Nations League.

Three months after meeting in the World Cup semi-finals, the sides lined up at the virtually-empty Stadion HNK Rijeka as the hosts completed a UEFA stadium ban for having a swastika on the pitch during a Euro 2016 qualifier against Italy.

Eric Dier and Harry Kane hit the woodwork either side of half-time in Rijeka, where Ross Barkley saw a penalty appeal rejected and Marcus Rashford wasted two great chances as the match ended 0-0.

Check out our report card from the match.

    FOOTBALL

Germany coach Joachim Low brushed off sharp criticism from his former captain Michael Ballack in the wake of the country’s dismal World Cup performance.

Low is under pressure to win tonight’s Nations League match away to the Netherlands in Amsterdam, and then beat the world champions France in Paris next Tuesday.

In other news, Jurgen Klopp admits he has no idea when he will win silverware but does not want to be remembered as the “fun” Liverpool manager who failed to secure a trophy.

The German celebrated his three-year anniversary at Anfield on Monday but despite taking the club to three finals he has yet to win one.

    CRICKET

Pakistan captain Sarfraz Ahmed has backed Yasir Shah to be more lethal with the ball after enduring a difficult Test in the drawn match against Australia.

The 32-year-old went wicketless in the first four days of the first Test but came alive on the final day, taking four scalps including centurion Usman Khawaja but Australia held on for a thrilling draw in Dubai on Thursday.

In other news, Brian Lara feels the West Indies are “missing” a key ingredient to become a stronger and more competitive nation in all formats of cricket, particularly Tests, but he insists it is down to the players and support of staff to find out exactly what that is.
