    TOP STORY

Cristiano Ronaldo enjoyed a winning return to Manchester United as Juventus claimed a comfortable Champions League victory that extended their Group H advantage to five points.

All eyes were on the Portuguese as he faced the club where he spent six years until moving to Real Madrid in 2009.

And almost predictably Ronaldo was involved in the winning goal for Paulo Dybala in the 17th minute.

His cross, a low one from the right saw Chris Smalling cut it out ahead of Juan Cuadrado, but there was Dybala to sweep home.

Real Madrid claimed a much-needed three points with a 2-1 win over Viktoria Plzen but their problems remained on show in an unconvincing display with the visitors missing a string of chances.

Goals in either half from Karim Benzema and Marcelo set the Champions League holders on their way to a first victory in six outings, but Patrik Hrosovsky’s 78th-minute goal set up a nervy finish. Check out our talking points from the match.

Elsewhere, Manchester City found their mojo as David Silva and Bernardo Silva both scored in a comfortable 3-0 victory over Shakhtar Donetsk.

In tonight’s matches, Barcelona are home to Inter Milan, PSG take on Napoli, Borussia Dortmund are in action against Atletico Madrid and Liverpool entertain Crvena Zvezda.

The two nations will meet in the opening game today in Abu Dhabi – just four days after the ‘hosts’ completed a 1-0 Test series win.

In other news, England were handed the biggest one-day defeat in their history as they ended a victorious series over Sri Lanka with a humbling 219-run loss in the fifth and final match.
