TOP STORY
Lionel Messi has been named La Liga’s best player and the division’s top goalscorer for the 2017/18 season at the Marca awards.
The Argentine scored twice on his return from an arm injury in the 3-2 defeat to Real Betis at the Camp Nou on Saturday.
The 31-year-old’s wins in the two categories means he has now been named Spain’s best player a stunning seven times, and the country’s leading goalscorer on five occasions.
“It’s good that the league is more competitive than ever,” Messi said after picking up his awards.
“There are no easy games. Anyone can beat anyone and that’s good for the spectators. I hope it stays like this.”
FOOTBALL
Santiago Solari has officially passed his audition at Real Madrid and will become their permanent head coach, according to the Spanish football federation (RFEF).
Solari has steered the club from the midst of a crisis left by Julen Lopetegui to four wins on the bounce, with the 4-2 victory over Celta Vigo on Sunday seemingly sealing the deal.
Real needed to make a decision by Monday – by La Liga rule an interim head coach must not be in place for a period exceeding 15 days – and papers filed to RFEF show that the board have indeed green lit Solari’s stay.
