  • Sweet 16: LA Lakers celebrate their NBA Championship win.

The LA Lakers claimed their last NBA Championship five years ago today with a dramatic 83-79 win in the deciding Game 7 against their perennial rivals, the Boston Celtics. A fourth quarter surge by the Lakers at the Staples Center sparked a 16th title for LA, putting them one behind the Celtics.

The hosts trailed 23-14, 40-34 and 57-53 after each of the first three quarters, but Derek Fisher’s three-pointer tied the game at 64 in the fourth. Despite a poor night, Kobe Bryant scored 10 of his 23 points in the final quarter. Ron Artest, Lamar Odom and Pao Gasol, with 18 rebounds, also played crucial roles. Victory was sweet revenge for defeat to Boston in the 2008 finals.
