  • LeMond supported his teammate, ignoring his bid to make history.

Defending champion Bernard 'the Badger' Hinault returned to the 1986 Tour de France following his record tying fifth championship in 1985.

Although the great French champion had the opportunity for an unprecedented sixth TDF championship, a 1985 promise of support to teammate Greg LeMond’s 1986 bid deferred Hinault’s chances.

LeMond returned full of promise and ready to take full control. But halfway through Hinault pulled away in a clear act of betrayal to lead the race while LeMond focused his anger on the pedals to fightback.

Remarkably he did, and LeMond became the first and remains the only American to win the Tour de France title.

1946: The 45th French Open Championships ends with victory for Marcel Bernard who beat Jaroslav Drobny (3-6, 2-6, 6-1, 6-4, 6-3).

1996: A bomb explodes at Atlanta Olympic Park, killed one person and injuring 110 more while another later dies after suffering a heart attack.

2012: The London Olympic Games kick off in spectacular fashion with the opening ceremony

2014: Vincenzo Nibali of Italy wins the Tour de France in dominant fashion.
