    Roy Keane was a celebrated midfielder who excelled as captain of Manchester United and the Republic of Ireland.

    Keane, who turns 44, played for various clubs during his 18-year career.

    He made a name for himself as a dominating midfielder, helping United to an incredible seven Premier League titles between 1993 and 2005.

    He represented Republic of Ireland with distinction for 14 years, captaining the team for most of the time.

    He played 67 international matches for his team, scoring nine times.

    After his retirement in 2006, he was appointed manager of Sunderland and he took the club from 23rd position in the Football League Championship to a division title and promotion up to the Premier League.

    In 2013, he was appointed assistant manager of the Republic of Ireland team.

    1978: Chris Read – England’s former wicketkeeper with 54Test dismissals and 43 in ODIs has become 37.
