Australia’s 1995 World Cup campaign was undercut by the so-called Super League war that had driven a wedge through the game in Australia.
It meant those players who were aligned with Super League were omitted from the Kangaroos squad and gave an opportunity to 21-year-old Andrew Johns who had only the year before become a regular in his Newcastle Knights side.
Two man-of-the-match performances in the group stage were soon followed but he saved his best for the final against England.
Not overawed by a tight, tense contest in front of 66,500 fans at Wembley, Johns kicked four goals and won his third man-ofthe- match award in Australia’s 16-8 victory.
