  • Big serve: Pete Sampras.

Pete Sampras’ years of utter dominance were still ahead of him when in 1991 he confirmed his status as an elite player by winning his second ATP Tour Final.

The clinching victory came on this day 24 years ago as the American beat compatriot Jim Courier in Frankfurt.

There was some sweet revenge for Sampras as well given he had seen his US Open title defence ended by Courier at the quarter-final stage earlier in the year.

That title at Flushing Meadow, in 1990, was Sampras’ first ever slam title. He’d finish with 14 (seven Wimbledon, five US Open, two Australian Open); and won the Tour Finals five times.

2001: Sale fly-half Charlie Hodgson scored 44 points for England in the 134-0 win over Romania at Twickenham.
