  • [L-R] Escobar, Wise, Immelman.

Aggressive, all action and highly competitive, Wise was at a time Chelsea’s most successful captain winning two FA Cups, a League Cup and a Cup Winners’ Cup before the riches of Roman Abramovich changed the club’s fortunes around.

Today he celebrates his 49th birthday and hopefully he is better remembered for his robust performances on the pitch rather than the ‘lego man’ hair he’s displayed as a pundit.

He started out at Wimbledon before signing for Chelsea in 1990 for a then-club record fee of £1.6m. The intimidating presence of both he and Vinnie Jones in midfield seemed to help him rediscover his best form and would lead them to an FA Cup final.

His performances earned him 21 caps for England and in the latter years of his playing career he took on coaching roles before becoming manager at Swindon Town and Leeds United.

1979: Trevor Immelman, South African golfer who won his maiden major championship at the 2008 Masters (36).

1980: Danish Kaneria, former Pakistani cricketer who played 61 Tests and 18 ODIs between 2000-2010 (35).

1986: Alcides Escobar, ishortstop for Kansas City Royals. His defensive qualities earned him the ‘El Mago’ nickname (29).

1992: Tom Rogic, midfielder for Celtic and Australia having also won Nike’s academy competition The Chance (23).
