“His lateral movement is horrible. That’s why you see that side-to-side movement from him as he gets out and up into his maximum velocity, the sides of his body are collapsing as opposed to having good efficient technique up top.
“His entire side of his body is collapsing,” Johnson added. “So he’s not able to strike and recover, strike and recover. He’s losing a lot of time there.”
Bolt’s height was seen as a major obstacle when he was a teenager and his coaches had written off his chances of becoming a successful 100m runner by the time he was 15.
Bolt has, of course, gone on to prove them wrong and shown that the usual disadvantages that accompany taller sprinters have not impeded his remarkable career.
“He’s able to come out of there [the blocks] and achieve the type of angles that these guys are,” Johnson explains in regards to the Jamaican’s height when compared to the usual, stockier sprinters.
“By 20m the race is already over.”
