  • Another enthralling round of the ADIB Staff Cricket Cup tournament was successfully concluded, with DSU Daredevils becoming the third team to qualify for the quarter-final.

The latest weekend in the tournament saw the action return to Abu Dhabi as Pools Three and Four resumed their progress. With their third victory on the trot in the competition, the DSU Daredevils finished on top of Pool Three to advance the last eight.

It was the Daredevils who started off proceedings for the day in Abu Dhabi with a thumping 81-run win over ADIB Brothers. Riding on a superb 81 from Muhammad Ayaz Butt, the Daredevils racked up 177-3 in their 10 overs before restricting ADIB Brothers to 96-6.

The next Pool Three clash saw the Abu Dhabi Knight Riders open their accounts in the tournament with a crushing 86-run victory over the Flyers. Having lost both their clashes in the previous round, the Knight Riders were in unrelenting mood as they amassed a total of 174 on way to victory.

The Flyers were dealt a second successive loss later in the day with ABDIB Brothers prevailing by five wickets in the final Pool Three outing.

Meanwhile at the second pitch, Pool Four teams kicked-off their campaigns in the tournament. A no-show by ADC Amigos meant that ADIB United and GISD were awarded a victory a piece on forfeit.

Despite the advantage provided to both winning teams, it was Group Risk which came flying out of the blocks to put themselves in pole position.

They first beat GISD by 13 runs in a high-scoring thriller before thoroughly outclassing ADIB United by 111 runs in the final Pool Four clash of the day. Earlier, ADIB United had grabbed three points in their clash against GISD with a narrow eight-run victory.

The results of Friday leave Group Risk and ADIB United tied at the top of Pool Four with six points each, although the former have the advantage with a game still in hand. Should they beat ADC Amigos in the next round, Group Risk will become the fourth team to qualify for the quarter-final.

“We played two matches against ADIB United & GISD and won both,” an elated Habib of Group Risk stated after the round.

“It’s a great initiative by ADIB and was a much awaited activity for staff. We are really enjoying it and wish we have more such activities in future. A very well organized tournament, thank you guys for your efforts.

“I specially request to CSR to allow us to play with hard balls in the future as we had good grounds and superb organisers.”

GISD might be out of the running for a quarter-final berth, but their skipper Shanid was still a satisfied man.

“Unfortunately, we lost two matches. I am extremely happy with our team performance. Amazing event, very well organised, with high quality. All our team members enjoyed it. Really good,” he said.

DSU Daredevils, meanwhile, are keeping their eyes on the big prize with the winning team set to pocket a cool AED 15,000.

“We played our last match of the pool and have qualified for the quarter-final by winning all three matches,” Daredevils skipper Ali Raza remarked.

“I am happy with my team’s performance and we will do better in the quarter finals as well.”
