  • Devil may care: Broner was once considered boxing’s ‘next Mayweather’.

Adrien Broner has claimed he has been approached about taking on Manny Pacquiao in what is believed  will be the Philippino icon’s final fight on April 9 in Las Vegas.

The WBA (super) lightweight title holder, nicknamed ‘The Problem’, has been added to the list of possible opponents for Pacquiao alongside welterweight titlist Timothy Bradley Jr., junior welterweight titlist Terence Crawford and Amir Khan.

Earlier this month the ‘Pac-Man’ delayed his decision on who he would face before retiring to run for a senate seat in the Philippines.

Broner, who is mentored by Floyd Mayweather Jr., was mentioned as a contender by Pacquiao’s advisor Michael Koncz in an interview with the Manila Bulletin last week, and speaking to FightHype.com he said: “I hear they want me to fight Pacquiao next. Michael Koncz actually called me and we’re waiting to hear from him.

“If Pacquiao wants me to be his last fight, then of course I will do it.”

Asked how he thought he would match-up against the only boxer to win world titles in eight weight classes the Cincinnati native added: “I love fighting southpaws, man, just check my record.

“He’s a great guy and it’ll be a hell of a fight. A young rising star against an elite Hall of Famer going out.

“I can’t wait to send him home back to the Philippines to go and be governor. But you can’t put it pass nobody because this is boxing and it only takes one shot.”

Pacquiao is coming off rotator cuff surgery after injuring his arm in a unanimous-decision loss to Floyd Mayweather in their May 2 megafight, which shattered pay-per-view records and grossed more than $600 million.

The 37-year-old plans to fight in April and then hit the campaign trail in the Philippines, where he is already a congressman but
expected to easily win a senate seat in the May national elections.

Broner has revived his career after dropping a points decision to Shawn Porter for only the second blot on his record in June by securing a TKO win over Russian Khabib Allakhverdiev for the WBA strap in October.

And his trainer Michael Stafford believes the Pacquiao fight would be a good match-up for his 26-year-old charge.

“I don’t know; it’s up to Al Haymon,” Stafford told RingTV.com. “He’s making the deal. I just want to say Adrien knows how to fight a southpaw.

He grew up fighting southpaw and he’s a southpaw also. I just changed him up to be a right-hander.”
