  • Cool hand Luke: Dubai’s Norrey.

The unstoppable Dubai Barracudas are now just one step away from their ultimate goal and an unbeaten season after slamming the Al Ain Desert Foxes.

Dubai have won blowout after blowout and Saturday’s match-up in the first round of the Emirates American League Football playoffs was no different, as they comfortably took care of business 33-0.

All of their damage was done in the first half, including a highlight 77-yard touchdown scamper by running back Luke Norrey in the opening quarter.

Fellow back Quinton Collins accounted for the first score with a 1-yard dive in the end zone, while back-up tailback Daniel Robinson made use of his increased playing time to add a 12-yard run in the second quarter. Robinson also intercepted a pass by Al Ain quarterback Mohammad Abdulla after half-time.

A rare quarterback-to-quarterback connection was made between Barracudas starter Zavier Cobb and second-stringer Milos Dimitrijevic to increase the lead to 22-0 at the end of the first quarter.

Robinson and Dimitrijevic were two of the players who got extended time on the field, but Barracudas coach Kyle Jordan wasn’t afraid to reinsert his first-team offence in the second half with the result all but decided.

“Everyone got some playing time,” Jordan said.

“Most likely we’re not going to do contact (in practice) over the next couple of weeks, so towards the end when it was out of hand, it was about taking reps seriously. It’s very easy in a game like that to let up and start fooling around and that’s how you get guys hurt. When they were in there, they were playing hard.”

Meanwhile, the Desert Foxes’ search for a victory will have to wait until next season as they ended their campaign without a win for the second straight year.

“We fought, we just don’t know how to finish,” coach Johnny Sharp said. “There’s no lack of fight in us, but it just didn’t add up to what we wanted to be today.”

Sharp also labeled the Barracudas “the most consistent team”, which they’ve proven by outscoring opponents 188-12 en route to win six of their seven games (tying one).
