    German Jupp Heynckes is a true giant of the footballing world, having enjoyed a hugely decorated career both as a player and manager.

    A striker during his playing days, Heynckes, 71 today, spent the majority of his career at Borussia Monchengladbach during the club’s golden era of the 1970s, winning four Bundesliga titles and a DFB Pokal, while Heynckes’ hattrick helped Gladbach win the 1975 UEFA Cup 5-1 against FC Twente.

    He is the third highest scorer in Bundesliga history with 220 goals – behind only Gerd Muller and Klaus Fischer.

    With West Germany, he won the European Championships in 1972 and the 1974 World Cup.

    As a manager, Heynckes won three German titles in charge of Bayern Munich, who he also led to Champions League triumph in 2013. Has also won the trophy with Real Madrid in 1998.

    1968: Marie-Jose Perec, retired French sprinter. Won back-to-back 400m gold at 1992 and ‘96 Olympics (48).

    1972: Daniela Silivas, Romanian ex-gymnast. Won six medals (three golds) at 1988 Seoul Olympic Games (44).

    1980: Grant Hackett, two-time 1,500m Olympic freestyle swim champion. Unbeaten in finals from 1996-07 (36).

    1985: Jake Long, offensive tackle, now a free agent, selected No1 in 2008 NFL Draft by the Miami Dolphins (31).
