  • Historic moment for South Korea.

South Korea earned a superb victory on this day 14 years ago to send Portugal crashing out of the World Cup and secure top spot in the group and a place in the last 16.

The Koreans deserved to reach the knockout stage for the first time ever after overwhelming a Portuguese side who were reduced to nine men after Joao Pinto and Beto were sent off.

A brilliant 70th-minute strike from Park Ji-Sung was enough for Guus Hiddink’s to set up a meeting with Italy.

It would get even better for the Dutchman’s underdogs as they beat the Azzurri 2-1 after extra-time and then stunningly knocked out Spain on penalties in the last eight. Germany ended their dream run in the semis.

Other memorable events in history today:

1839: The Henley Regatta, now established as British rowing’s showpiece event, took place for the first time.

1982: Eventual champions Italy opened their World Cup campaign in Spain with a goalless draw against Poland.

2009: Andy Murray beats James Blake in the final at Queens.

    2012: Spurs sack Harry Redknapp.
