  • It’s always nice to help those in need and a sports tournament fundraiser is no different. If you have no plans this Friday (February 7), the Dubai Netball League (DNL) is organising the Inter Gulf (IG) Fundraising Tournament, and there’s still time to convince your friends and families to take part.

Taking place from 14:00 to 18:00 at Dubai Sports City, funds raised from the tournament will help DNL IG players to represent Dubai at the annual IG Netball Championship next month.

Friday’s tournament is already drawing a lot of interest, and among those taking part are two senior netball teams from Adjutant General’s Corps (AGC).

Sixteen members of AGC will embark on a 15 hour-round trip from UK for this fundraiser. AGC are no strangers to travelling. In fact, AGC netball players travel overseas to play their matches on a regular basis. Among the destinations they travel to include Barbados, Hong Kong and South Africa where they play against other Army Corps teams throughout the year as well as participate in the Inter-Corp championships annually.

If you fancy facing AGC, then the entry fee is Dh70 per person. Whether you’ve played netball or not, you will surely find the sport exciting.

Although netball is generally played by women in many countries, this tournament is open to both genders, so guys don’t be afraid of taking part especially as the proceeds are going towards a good cause! You can either sign up as individuals, independent teams or as a DNL team.

The format of the tournament depends on the number of teams participating but all teams will play sufficient matches during the four-hour long competition. Teams must comprise of a minimum of seven players with ideally no more than nine players in the squad.

To get yourself or your team on the entry list, email Natali Bonardi, DNL vice-chair at [email protected]. The funds raised will help DNL IG participants represent Dubai at attend the IG netball tournament in Bahrain.

DNL will be sending four strong competitive teams for the two-day tournament (March 7-8), who will be up against teams from Bahrain, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait as well as Abu Dhabi and Al Ain.

The IG tournament is one of the largest sporting events for women across the Gulf. Since being formed in 1974, IG has grown rapidly and is now the largest social and competitive league in Dubai played by people of different ages and nationalities.

With Dubai winning the IG tournament more than any other regional team, the emirate will be keen for more glory and every penny raised from the fundraiser will play a huge part in helping them achieve success.

Just taking part in the tournament makes a big difference, and if DNL do triumph in the Bahrain tournament, then there is more reason to celebrate especially as Dubai are hosting the IG tournament next year.

DNL are also looking for sponsorship, so if your company is interested in becoming the sole title sponsor of the league or advertising opportunities, then email Helena Houia, DNL chair at [email protected] for more information.

If you’re interested in helping raise money then get yourself down to Dubai Sports City where your participation will make a big difference.
