Aya picks up fifth medal for Qatar in AWST

  • Qatar’s Aya Majdi won the table tennis gold at the ongoing second Arab Women Sports Tournament 2014 at the Sharjah Ladies Club.

    The victory adds a fifth table tennis medal to Qatar’s tally. Majdi had earlier won gold in the doubles event in the company of Maha Abdul Ridha while compatriots Noura Al Abri and Kholoud Abdul Ridha picked up the bronze medal.

    Eighteen players from five countries – UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, Yemen and Kuwait – took part in the table tennis tournaments.

    Following first and second round eliminations, Kuwait’s Mariam Baron beat UAE’s Majd Al Boloushi 4-0 (11-8, 11-7, 11-7, 11-3), and Qatar’s Noura Al Abri prevailed over Yemen’s Sina Khamis 4-0 (12-10, 11-4, 11-5, 11-9) in the quarter-finals.

    Qatar’s Maha Abdul Ridha then beat Kuwait’s Sheikha Adnan 4-0 (11-1, 11-8, 11-2, 11-6), while Qatar’s Aya Majdi was made to work by Bahrain’s Kulthoum Al Yasi 4-2 (11- 2, 8-11, 11-9, 11-8, 9-11, 11-6) on her way to the semis.

    In the semi-finals, Kuwait’s Mariam Baron won against Qatar’s Noura Al Abri 4-1 (11-9, 8-11, 11-8, 11- 4, 11-8), while Aya Abdul Ridha beat her colleague Maha Abdul Ridha 4-2 (11-4, 11-5, 12-14, 11-4, 8-11, 11- 6).

    Qatar’s Maha Abdul Ridha won the third place, overcoming her colleague Noura Al Abri 3-2 (11-6, 11-4, 10-12, 8-11, 11-9).

    Aya Majdi dominated the final, beating Kuwait’s Mariam Baron 4-0 (11-4, 11-9, 11-8, 11-7).

    The tournament, which began on February 2, runs until February 12.
