  • Greg Chappell.

The first Test of the Frank Worrell Trophy had to be a critical one from the series’ point of view. The Australians had clear intentions to draw first blood at Brisbane and the West Indies succumbed, but only after the Australian skipper Greg Chappell, captaining the side for the first time, scored centuries in each innings.

In response to West Indies’ first innings total of 214, thanks to a splendid performance by Australian bowlers Dennis Lillee (3 for 84) and Gary Gilmour (4 for 42), Australia were off to a good start. Later in their innings Chappell put on a show and played some exquisite shots through the onside mostly before finally falling for 123.

Australia were bowled out for 366, taking a 152-run lead. West Indies in their second innings though were off to a poor start and despite hundreds from Lawrence Rowe and Alvin Kallicharran, and a half-century from Deryck Murray could not take a monumental lead. They were bundled out for 370, setting a 219-run target for Australia to get.

Ian and Greg Chappell made sure Australia won by 8 wickets. While Greg registered another century, Australia took a 1-0 lead. The Australian captain was unbeaten on 109.

The series eventually finished 5-1 in Australia favour, a thumping of Clive Lloyd’s touring West Indies side.
