  • Considered one of the most clutch players in NFL history, the kicker has had a historic career at a position that doesn’t get much acclaim.

Turning 44 today, Vinatieri is the oldest active player in the league at the moment, playing for the Indianapolis Colts. But his legend began with the New England Patriots, with whom he won three Super Bowls, including nailing game-winning kicks in Super Bowl XXXVI and XXXVIII.

He later added another ring with the Colts when they won Super Bowl XLI in 2007.

Overall, Vinatieri holds records for most postseason points scored with 234, most overtime field goals made with 10, and most Super Bowl appearances and wins for a kicker with four and five, respectively.

He’s also the only player to ever score 1,000 points with two different teams.

    Other birthdays on this day:

1960: Ray Bourque, Canadian former NHL player who holds record for most career points for defencemen (56).

1979: James Blake, American retired tennis player who reached a career-high ranking of world No4 (37).

1986: Tom Huddlestone, English footballer for Premier League Club Hull City (30).

1994: Adam Peaty, British swimmer who won gold in the 100m breaststroke at the Rio Olympics (22).
