Wadi Adventure will host its first 5km Glow and Go run this month and organisers are inviting people to sign up before registration closes next Tuesday.
Taking place on Friday, May 23, at 20:00, it promises to be a run that will be full of fun, and it is something for everyone to enjoy with the run not timed.
Open to participants from 16 and over, the run offers something different from the traditional Wadi Adventure races that see people jump, crawl, climb and swim as they overcome obstacles to complete the course.
“We’ve seen a lot of great success in the previous editions of the Wadi Adventure races that we’ve held previously,” said Nora Hassan, sales and marketing manager at Wadi Adventure. “And we found there are some people who don’t participate in the Wadi Adventure races purely because it’s a bit of a challenge as it’s a 10km run.
“Usually it has a lot of obstacles and it’s quite intimidating so we wanted to have something that is more inclusive. Anyone with any fitness level can participate in this run. It’s enjoyable and a fun way of having a great time. It also promotes the initiative of having a healthy lifestyle.”
And with it being a run and not a race, where your finish doesn’t matter, it is entirely up to you whether you want to run, walk or jog the 5km course.
When you cross the finish line, you can cool down with a splash in the pool while dancing to tunes played by the DJ.
Entry costs Dh150 per person which also includes a t-shirt, glow items and refreshments. And while it is the first Glow and Go run, Hassan hopes this will be the start of many more at Wadi Adventure.
“As this is the first time we want to see how popular the run is,” said Hassan. “If it grows in popularity then maybe we can have another one. The most important thing is that people can enjoy as we want to promote the benefits of having a healthy lifestyle”.
“There’s no other event like this in the UAE. It gives people the opportunity to get their running shoes on and have a really good time.”

Since its launch in 2012, the A2 Squash Championship Series has been a huge hit with enthusiasts of the sport in the UAE and this weekend witnesses the first of three tournaments to be staged in 2014.
The championship series is a platform for squash players and aficionados in the UAE, where people of different nationalities and talent can come together and interact.
It was initiated to bridge the gap for a central showcase for squash players in the country. Founded by Aroop Misra, who co-runs the series along with Neil Young, the first event was staged in June 2012 and the competition this week represents the fourth edition.
The finals take place at the Fitness First Community Clubs of Meadows Town Centre (junior categories), Meadows Village (ladies matches) and Lakes Club in Dubai, which will host the men’s professional tournament.
The championship includes a host of different categories including an Open category for the pros, A category for experienced players, B for intermediate, C for beginners, a Ladies category, and then male and female under 19s, under 15s and under 13s.
Attendance is free to the general public, and organisers promise a fun-filled atmosphere for all squash fans.
“Attendees would get to watch the up and coming stars of tomorrow as well as experienced local players at the top of their game,” says tournament director Young.
Amir Malik, who is the No1 player in Abu Dhabi, and will be in action in the men’s professional event, which is a Closed Satellite PSA-affiliated tournament with a total prize money of $1000.
The tournament features a 16-player draw and includes players from the UAE, Pakistan, Wales, India and Egypt.
“The whole purpose of these closed satellites is to introduce the upcoming stars of tomorrow – those looking to get points and improve their rankings,” says Young. “And in August, we’re planning on doing our second series for the local players but we’re also doing a PSA Challenger tournament, which offers a $15,000 prize pot.”

Seeking some fear-inducing thrill activities this weekend? Then you don’t want to miss out on competing in the UAE’s first bungee jumping competition in Dubai on Friday especially as registration closes today (Thursday) at 20:00.
Organised by Gravity Zone, the UAE’s only permanent bungee site, and supported by the Dubai Sports Council, the competition will see individuals and teams of three pit against each other in the one-day event testing their skills from a 50m high crane.
Open for anyone aged between 14 and 50-year-olds, the competition, which will have three categories – male, female and teams (mixed), will be held at Powerplay Sports on Sheikh Zayed Road from 14:00.
The competition will be held on a three-stage knock out basis, with competitors registering the top scores advancing to the next round. The top two males, females and teams in each category will receive prizes and trophies.
“The idea was to create an event where we could offer people the experience of bungee jumping in a fun group environment and also add a competitive element to it as well,” said Ramez Shawki, managing director of Gravity Zone, which was established in 2012.
“Dubai has become a hub for extreme sports and adding bungee jumping to Dubai’s sports calendar is only natural to the development of alternative sports.”
If you dare to enter, you will have to impress a panel of judges, who will be assessing your jump quality as well as awarding the individuals and teams scores across a number of criteria, including leap and freefall style, bravery and pre and post-jump challenges.
There are no strict entry requirements to take part in the competition. While an absence of a fear of heights is helpful, competitors are not required to have previous jump experience as all technical and safety aspects of the bungee will be explained prior to the start of the competition by the Gravity Zone team.
The only documents you have to sign are the health and safety forms prior to competing. While the competition is meant as a fun and social event open for any adrenaline junkies to enter, it will hopefully be the start of bungee jumping being a competitive sport.
“The aim of holding this competition is also to highlight bungee jumping as a potential competitive sport, a first for the Middle East region,” said Shawki.
Besides the competition, plenty of on-site entertainment will be available for what will be an adventurous day out whether you are competing or not, with the emphasies on promoting a healthy lifestyle.
The ‘health village’ will offer a taste of the products and services from various health and fitness companies, which includes a climbing wall for children by Adventure HQ, on-site fitness assessments by OP Integrated Lifestyle Center and paleo-inspired food by The Cycle Bistro.
Shawki said: “These are different things that makes the event a lot more interesting for the spectators so that they can have something else to do at the venue while the competition is taking place.”
While it will be an enjoyable day out, you will also be able to make donations to the official charity partner – Breast Cancer Arabia. The charity aims to raise awareness about breast cancer and its treatment, and was chosen by Gravity Zone having worked together in the past.
To enter the competition, you must visit the Gravity Zone website at www.gravityzone.co before 20:00 today. Individual entries cost Dh360 while a team of three will cost entrants Dh1,000.
Members of the public will get free admission to the on-site entertainment – ‘health village’, which opens from 14:00.
