On This Day: Serena beats Venus in AO final

  • On this day in 2003, Venus and Serena Williams competed against each other in a final for the seventh time.

    It was however their first meeting in the Australian Open final. Younger sister Serena, won the contest 7-6(4), 3-6, 6-4 in what came to be known as the ‘Serena Slam’ as she became the first player since Steffi Graf to hold all four Grand Slams at once.

    On the other hand, Venus became the first since Martina Hingis to compete in four consecutive Grand Slam finals.

    2007: Liverpool confirmed they had received an approach from American businessman George Gillett ‘’which may or may not lead to an offer’’ for the club.

    2008: Adam Gilchrist announced his retirement from international cricket.

    2009: Andy Murray crashed out of the Australian Open, losing in five sets to Fernando Verdasco in the fourth round.

    2014: Manchester United completed the club record £37.1 million (Dh194m) capture of Chelsea midfielder Juan Mata.
