Duplays’ new netball leagues begin from September 1, and there’s still time for female players to sign up online.
Titled ‘Behind Netball Lines IV’, the league, open only to women, is now in its fourth edition at Duplays, the UAE’s largest sport and social club with over 5,000 members. All the leagues are recreational standard level with two different divisions.
The leagues are played at three different venues in Dubai – Collegiate American School (CAS), Emirates International School and Dubai College (Mondays, Division II) with CAS also staging the Tuesday Division III league.
Gareth Curtis, Dubai operations manager at Duplays, said: “Behind Netball Lines is our most popular females sports league at Duplays. It attracts a lot of female players who enjoy the social and competitive side of the game.
“The previous editions have seen a big number of females take part and with people returning from their vacations, and looking for something fun to do, it is also a great way of keeping fit.”
Although it’s open to adults, high school players can also apply with the leagues open to anyone, regardless of their playing abilities.
Curtis added: “Some people have said they haven’t played since high school or for many years. However, we encourage them to give the sport a go as it blends well in doing some exercise and meeting new people.”
With the leagues played at different venues in Dubai, Curtis believes this is a bonus for the players, who don’t want to travel far.
He said: “We realise that Dubai is very big, and with the popularity of the sport we felt it would be good to have the leagues at different locations. Not only are the leagues played in indoor air-conditioned facilities, the locations are easily accessible in Dubai, so people can finish work and head straight to the venues to play their matches.”
The leagues last nine weeks, with matches scheduled between 19:00 and 22:30.
Team entries cost Dh3,900 which must be paid in one full payment. Registration must be done online by visiting www.duplaysdubai.playpass.com.
Having seen many players take part in the previous editions, Curtis advises players to sign up early.
He said: “With this already being a popular league at Duplays, spaces will go fast because a lot of players do return when the new leagues begin.
“It will be another successful league and there will be prizes for the winners as well as special awards given throughout the league.
“One of the bonuses is that it’s more cheaper and fun than going to the gym every day.”
