Fazza Championships for People with Disability hosted by Dubai Club for the Disabled

  • The Championships included the Badminton Championship for the first time this year for mentally challenged individuals, along with the Table Tennis Championship.

    Dubai Club for the Disabled, on Friday (January 9, 2015), hosted the second day of the Fazza National Championships for People with Disability, organized and supervised by the Hamdan Bin Mohammed Heritage Center in collaboration with the Dubai Club for the Disabled.

    The Championships included the Badminton Championship for the first time this year for mentally challenged individuals, along with the Table Tennis Championship for individuals with physical disabilities and cerebral palsy, which were attended by Ahmed Mohammed Hassan Al Hammadi – Chairman of the Technical Committee of the Championships; Ali Salem – Supervisor of the Badminton Championship; and Abdullah Hassan – Supervisor of the Table Tennis Championship.

    The 2-day Athletics Championship for people with different disabilities was also held on Friday at Dubai Police Officers Club, with the participation of more than 160 players amid a large turnout of spectators and participants' families and friends.

    Majid Al Usaimi, Executive Director of the Fazza National Championships for People with Disability expressed his satisfaction at the increase in participants this year, saying: "I'd like to extend my sincere thanks to His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, for his continued support for the Fazza National Championships for People with Disability.

    "Now, seven years since the inception of the Fazza Championships, we can truly see the vision of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum bearing bountiful fruits – the Fazza National Championships for People with Disability has served as a strong platform to encourage and motivate people with disabilities to face up to and overcome their challenges.”

    For his part, Ahmed Mohammed Hassan Al Hammadi – Chairman of the Technical Committee of the Fazza National Championships for People with Disability, said: "We have introduced the Badminton Championship, which is held for the first time this year, in order to expand the games we offer, so that there will be more options for the people with disabilities to suit different capabilities.

    "This game is also expected to acquire more importance in the Olympic Games, scheduled to be held in Tokyo – Japan in 2020, so we look forward to exploring more national talents and honing and preparing them to compete at an international level."

    Saleh Mohammed Hassan, Member of the BoD of the UAE Athletics Federation and Chairman of the Jury Committee of the Fazza National Championship for People with Disability, pointed out: "The Fazza National Championships for People with Disability's importance stems from the role it plays in shaping the experiences of the participants, referees, medical staff and supervisors alike, by providing an atmosphere similar to those found at international tournaments. 

    Athlete Seham Al Rashidi, of the Dubai Club for the Disabled, commended the significant role played by the Fazza Championships in raising awareness within the UAE community and changing stereotypes towards people with disabilities.

    She underscored the importance of such tournaments in motivating people with disabilities and urged them to follow a strict training program to succeed.

    Athlete Jawaher Jamal, of the Abu Dhabi Club for the Disabled, agreed with her colleague, Seham Al Rashidi, and talked about her personal experience and the contribution of the tournament in changing her life.

    She shared her personal experience in overcoming a disability related to her hand and how a program of regular training along with determination and persistence helped her participate in the tournament, enabled her to overcome her disability and win numerous medals and ranks in the shot put competition.
