  • Popular: More than 200 people took part in the aquathlon last year and big numbers are expected this time as well.

Over 100 people have already signed up for the GO Sport/ Sharbatly Fruit Aquathlon on Saturday – and there’s still time to join them and have a chance of winning some fantastic prizes.

Registration closes on Friday before proceedings get underway at 07:00 on Saturday, February 21, at The Fairmont, The Palm in Dubai.

The first edition was a huge success as 200 people of different ages and abilities turned out last month as they swam and ran around the iconic venue.

It’s no surprise given that aquathlon is fast growing not just around the world, but also in the UAE with many community events organised throughout the year.

And organisers Super Sports Events are urging people not to miss out on this event, which is sanctioned by Dubai Sports Council.

Top class: Various age categories are on offer.

“There was a great turn out of over 200 entries in the first race of the series,” said Warren van der Merwe, race organiser.

“With it being a very busy weekend for multi-sports events in the UAE, I am very confident we will have a similar number of entries once again.”

The event is open to everyone with different age groups available. The Junior Super Sprint, for 12-years and under, consists of a 200m swim followed by a 2.5km run. The Super Sprint – 375m swim and 2.5km run, has two age groups (13 to 18-years and 19 and over) and can also be competed as a relay.

There are also four age groups for The Sprint distance, which involves a 750m swim and 5km run. And for those who want to test themselves further, there’s the Olympic distance which compromises of a 1.5km swim and 10km run.

Van der Merwe added: “The new venue of Fairmont with its calm waters of The Palm and adjacent running track under the monorail was praised by all participants in the first race and many are looking forward to returning to improve their times and performance.”

Big test: Participants can opt for Olympic distances too.

Attractive prizes are on offer with a one-night stay, spa treatments, restaurant vouchers and family beach passes at the Fairmont The Palm all up for grabs.

And Kamal Khalil, director of Spa and Recreation at Fairmont, said: “It was amazing to see so many participants for the first race and we are proud to support the community with this Aquathlon series which is in line with our focus on working closer with the community and contributing to its health and wellness in 2015.”
