  • Great initiative: The Abu Dhabi Terry Fox Run aims to raise funds for cancer research in the UAE.

Thousands will flock to the Corniche tomorrow (Friday) for the annual Abu Dhabi Terry Fox Run and with registrations open on the day, it’s not too late to be part of this fund-raising event.

This weekend’s non-competitive run is rather special as it’s the 20th edition in honour of Canadian athlete Fox, who died of cancer in 1981.

Registration is free and will open at 07:00 on the day at East Plaza, ahead of the 10:00 start.

With no minimum age, it’s aimed for everyone whether you’re an advanced athlete or a beginner.

Although it’s described as a run, you can walk, jog and even roller-blade along the 8.5km distance course from the East Plaza to Mina Zayed and back.

The capital’s inaugural edition in 1995 attracted approximately 100 runners and according to early numbers an anticipated 20,000 will take to the streets making it the biggest turn-out outside Canada, where it first began.

The UAE is no stranger to holding these events before.

Hop on board: Entry for the non-competitive run is free.

Fujairah, Al Ain, Dubai and Ras Al Khaimah have held their own runs and over Dh15.4 million has been raised so far with proceeds helping cancer research in the
    UAE.

Terry Fox T-shirts will be on sale during the day and all proceeds will go to charity, while a DJ and the Abu Dhabi Police Band will be part of the entertainment activities.

Previous editions have been a huge success with families, friends, work colleagues and school children getting involved.

And this year’s event looks to be no different for what promises to be a memorable day in honour of Fox.

After having his right leg amputated following bone cancer, the Canadian decided to run in his country to help raise money for those suffering from the illness.

But 143 days into the run, Fox died aged 22 as the cancer spread and finally took its toll.

Since then, Fox’s initiative has become a global success with countries in North America, Europe, Asia and the Middle East holding their own events.

Nafisa Taha, chairwoman of Terry Fox Run, Abu Dhabi Organising Committee, said: “People who complete Friday’s run will have a big smile on their face because it’s very energising and inspiring, and it’s for a great cause.”
