Duplays, UAE’s largest sport and social club with over 5,000 people, has lined up two new basketball leagues with registration now open.
Basketball is one of the most popular sport in Duplays’ programme and it’s no surprise that the league is returning later this month.
‘Nothing but Net IIII’ is now in its fourth edition, and there will be two separate leagues this year, one being on Mondays (beginning August 18) and the other on Wednedays, starting two days later. Both leagues will be played at Dubai International Academy.
The only difference between the two leagues is the playing level. For example, the Monday league is a competitive level of basketball, while Wednesdays is recreational standard.
Gareth Davies, Dubai operations manager at Duplays, said: “The Monday league is a competitive level, so it’s aimed for players who have played the sport a lot of times and have a good level of playing experience.
“And the Wednesday league is aimed for players who have not played the sport often and want to learn the basics of the game.
“The previous editions have been very successful with big turnout for both leagues. There have been some great matches and the feedback from the players has been very positive.”
The leagues will be playing according to FIBA (international basketball federation) rules with each team fielding five players on the court.
Matches will be played in two 20-minute halves with rolling substitutions allowed.
If a team concedes eight fouls, the opposition will be awarded two free throws.
Entry for both leagues costs Dh3,000 per team for the eightweek competition. Matches for both tournaments will be played from 19:00 to 22:30.
Davies is hopeful that there will be positive turnout for the leagues especially as it begins in the middle of the month.
“We want people to come and be active,” he said.
“We have much passion about the sport as well the social side of it. And with Eid holidays now finished, people are returning to the UAE and will be looking for something active to do. Not only is this popular, but it is a fast-growing sport around the world.
“Whether you’re a beginner, intermediate or advanced level player, there is a league for you, and it’s a great way of making new friends.”
