  • Budding talents: Westminster Under-12 boys could be in with a chance to watch Manchester United live.

Lycee Francais International George Pompidou (LFIGP) continued their impressive start to the Dubai Schools Football Cup after their boys’ under-12 and girls’ under-16 sides maintained their 100 per cent records with another clean sweep of victories yesterday.

The boys beat Al Muhallab School 3-0 and claimed a 2-1 win over Dubai Arab American School to sit second in group B with 12 points, just one place behind Dubai National School (Al Barsha), who are three points clear but have a played an extra game.

The latter, who also boast a 100 per cent record, scored 33 goals in three straight wins yesterday. The LFIGP girls, meanwhile, cruised to a 10-0 win over Dubai Arab American School to grab top spot in Group A.

With both his teams doing well, LFIGP coach Kevin Denecker was delighted, but urged them to remain focused if they want to win the tournament and the once-ina- lifetime prize that comes with it – an all-expenses paid trip to watch Manchester United.

He said: “My teams are improving each week. This is going to be a very long tournament so each player has to keep fit and improve during the eight weeks. We will have to give it our best. We respect our opponents and we know this will be tough competition for us.

“The tournament is a big chance for my players and teams as it brings an opportunity to learn new things, meet new people and to learn about team spirit.”

Also in impressive form yesterday were Winchester School (Jebel Ali), who picked up maximum points with wins over Our Own High School – Al Warqa (3-0) and Arab Unity School (2-1) in the boys’ under-12s, Group A.

Westminster School also enjoyed a perfect record yesterday with wins over Winchester School (Dubai Oud Methda), 4-0, and Oxford School (Dubai), 3-0 , in under-15s, group C.

Westminster also won both their games last week, but coach Sarvesh Pandey said his players can still improve: “There were some good games. Our team was physically and mentally stronger than the other teams. The contribution from each player is there.

“We have won some matches but we are not ready to hype up. We are still looking to improve.”

Yesterday, Westminster’s girls’ team lost 1-0 against St Mary’s Catholic High School, but claimed a 5-1 win over Winchester School (Dubai Oud Metha) in Group B.
