  • The British School Al Khubairat (BSAK) chalked up another victory in their long list of sporting achievements with their Under-13 side retaining the British Schools Middle East (BSME) title.

The Abu Dhabi-based institution travelled to Muscat, Oman as the team to beat following their triumph last season. Despite strong competition from 11 other schools from around the region, they showed why they are defending champions with impressive performances in the multi-discipline event.

They got their tournament off to a winning start with their girls’ side being crowned football champions. Flora Berens and Alicia Digby-Jones held their nerve to convert the decisive spot kicks and Lily McDonald pulled off a string of superb saves to guide BSAK to victory over Kings’ School Al Barsha.

The achievement was more impressive considering their defence Neve Woodward, Libby O’Sullivan and Tansie Jerron-Quarshie did not concede a single goal while Lamia Bajric was the top-scorer with six strikes.

The boys’ volleyball side reached the final but despite coming back from a set down to St Christopher’s Bahrain, Alex Crouchman’s side was edged out in a thrilling encounter.  But the boys got their revenge with victory over St Christopher’s with Yiannis Petras firing the winner in the semi-finals.

That was just the start of things to come with Liam Vorster’s deflected shot earning a well-earned win over British School Muscat.

There was more reason to celebrate with BSAK standing top of the podium again in athletics with a rich haul of medals.

Among those to impress were Woodward, who won the 200m and 400m duels, Ben Weston (winner of 200m) and Nicole Mensah (silver medalist in 800m). For McDonald, despite suffering an Achilles tendon injury, she fought the pain to help her side win silver in the 200m relay.

Their performances saw them crowned overall champions and head coach Maddison Fern had nothing but praise for each and every individual.

“I cannot praise highly enough the commitment and determination of the boys and girls, who were rewarded for all their efforts with outstanding success in all the competitions,” she said.  “Our luggage on the journey back was a lot heavier and the metal detectors at the airport would have been working overtime.

“What was especially pleasing was that everyone contributed: every member of the team did something that they will be able to remember making a difference to the result. I’d like to thank my colleagues for all their hard work, and all the parents who came to Muscat to support. It’s been very special.”
