  • Be a part of the action: Over 900 triathletes have already confirmed their participation for the event.

The ITU World Triathlon is coming to Abu Dhabi in March, and if you want to be involved in the inaugural edition, there’s still time to register yourself.

Over 900 triathletes have confirmed their participation for the multi-discipline race which features a swim, cycle and run on March 7, drawing some of the best athletes from around the world.

Now part of the ITU World Series, the Abu Dhabi leg will be the first of 10 races to take place around the world, with Chicago hosting the finale in September.

The triathlon series is open to 12-years and above for teams or 16-years for individuals.

The race, which begins at the Abu Dhabi Sailing and Yacht Club, has three course categories.

For beginners, the sprint option is available, which consists of a 500m swim, a 20km cycle and a 5km run.

The Olympic section involves a 1.5km swim, 40km cycle and 10km run.

Top class: Some of the best athletes in the world will be in action in Abu Dhabi.

For those who want to test themselves and have experience of taking part in triathlons, the maxi category features a 2km swim, an 80km cycle and a 20km run to the finish line.

It’s up to you whether you want to take part individually or take on the challenge as a team.

After the amateurs finish their race, which begins at 06:45, the professionals will open their campaign, providing a perfect opportunity for spectators to see the action up close from a 2,000 seater grandstand.

“While the Abu Dhabi Triathlon was an exhibition race, this is part of the World Triathlon series,” said Paul Venn, head of race operations, ITU World Triathlon Series, Abu Dhabi.

“What makes this race different is the World Triathlon is spectator-friendly racing. The course is designed to be exciting and fun. The entry field will consist of the some of the best triathletes and without question, it’s going to be an exciting race.”

He added: “This really is the pinnacle of triathlon. The sport is very accessible and it’s a great way to keep fit and healthy.

“Some people may think they’re not well equipped to do this sport, but the shortest swim is only 500 metres. It may sound like a daunting aspect but it’s quite achievable.”

Entry fees range from Dh450 to Dh650 for individuals and Dh600 to Dh800 for teams.
