The Cleveland Cavaliers have agreed terms with All-Star point guard Kyrie Irving on a five-year contract extension, owner Dan Gilbert tweeted yesterday.
According to reports, the deal is a maximum contract worth approximately $90 million (Dh330.57m) and will run through the 2019-20 season. The deal can’t officially be signed until July 10.
The 22-year-old had one year left on his contract and would have become a restricted free agent next summer had he turned down Cleveland’s offer.
In that scenario, teams wanting to sign him could have only offered a four-year deal which the Cavaliers would have had the opportunity to match.
Instead, Irving remains with the team that drafted him with the top pick in the 2011 NBA Draft after averaging 20.8 points and a career-high 6.1 assists in his third season in the league.
