  • Thailand have performed well in the nominations.

The shortlist for the 2016 Asian Sports Industry Awards (SPIA Asia), to be held in Bangkok on October 3 and 4, was announced with host nation Thailand performing strongly.

SPIA Asia 2016, which will recognise the achievements of the sports industry in Asia, is open to 17 Asian countries.

As many as 208 entries were received in a total of 19 categories (four Thailand-specific, 12 Asian, one international and two recognition awards).

Off these, 161 entries made the final cut and will now be presented before the judging panel vote on October 3.

In the four Thailand-specific awards, 60 entries have been shortlisted, while 12 other submissions from the host country will battle out for top honours in other categories.

Apart from the awards ceremony on Tuesday, October 3, the SPIA Asia 2016 also features a conference – ‘The Business of Sports – Asia’s Sports Industry in the Fastlane II’, which will feature some of the biggest names from the sports industry in the region.

The Asian Sports Industry Awards is the official celebration of the contributions made towards growth and development of sport across the region over the past 12 months.

The awards are founded by MMC Sportz, a Dubai and Manila based sports advertising and communication agency, and Sport360.

The event is supported by Sports Authority of Thailand, and Lt Col Ruj Saengudom, Deputy Governor for Professional Sports and Privileges, said: “Thailand has seen tremendous growth in the sports are-na in recent years… both in terms of athlete skills and also in terms of our domestic facilities and sports industry.

“SPIA Asia is a great opportunity for Thailand’s sports industry to gather with key players in international sports and showcase our talents. We hope to pick up a few of the awards which would be an additional catalyst and motivator for our local organisers and brands.”

The awards take place next month.

The event is also endorsed and supported by the Ministry of Tourism and Sports and the Tourism Authority Thailand.

SPIA Asia 2016 is supported for the second year running by Singha Corporation, and Jaturon Zane Himathongkom, Director Corporate Strategy-International Sports Marketing, felt the high caliber of attendees was representative of not only the sports industry but the region’s business sector as a whole.

“We greatly enjoyed the strong mix of business people and sports experts, and while we acknowledge that the key focus is on the awards, we were pleased to see so many sport industries involved,” said Himathongkom.

“The passion for sport has very much defined the Singha Corporation’s philosophy and is one of the reasons we have continued and expanded our partnership with SPIA Asia this year.”

Mark Kar, Development Director at Sport360, added: “Credibility is key to the awards – therefore each shortlisted submission will now go through a further two rounds of process, overseen by a judging panel of 20 of the region’s industry experts, and facilitated by international auditors.”

On the much anticipated conference, Eric Gottschalk, CEO of MMC Sportz, said: “The conference will gather the industry leaders to discuss best practices and latest developments within the sports industry.

“With an incredible strong panel of speakers and presenters lined up, it has become the must attend event of our industry.”

Confirmed speakers for the conference are part of such reputed companies like IMG, Lagardere, GroupM, MediaPro, Total Sports Asia, TATA Consulting, PBI, ASN, SMG Insight as well as many government and official bodies.
