  • Light at the end of tunnel: Ed Lewsey.

The UAE will try to breathe new life into the international scene in the Emirates when they jet out to Malaysia this weekend to take part in Division II of the Asia Rugby Championship.

Roelof Kotze’s men head to Kuala Lumpur on the back of a 36-31 friendly defeat to Lloyd’s RFC, but the South African, and his team members, remained upbeat.

Team captain Adam Telford said: “This squad is a very strong squad with a good balance of the best Emirati and expat players who are eligible to represent the UAE.”

The Jebel Ali Dragons No8 missed the entire 2014/15 club season after injuring himself in pre-season, but is excited to be one of seven Dragons aiming to breathe new life into the international team.

When asked about UAE’s competitors, Telford added: “In terms of the upcoming games, this is a pivotal year for the UAE and our aim is a return to Division I.

“Thailand, Malaysia and Chinese Taipei are somewhat unknown to us and if we play as a team, to our full potential, I am confident we will top Division II.”

Harlequins’ scrum-half Ed Lewsey admitted the UAE has seen some dark days recently, but he is looking forward to being part of a group who can shine some light on the progress of rugby in the Emirates.

“The squad is upbeat. We’re going to give it our best shot and we’re excited, there’s real enthsuaism and commitment in the group.

“We know it’s been a dark few years for UAE rugby but the mood in the camp is positive now.”
