  • Gripping stuff: The BASK rugby team.

The new academic year is less than four weeks old but British School of Al Khubairat (BSAK) have wasted no time at all with preparations for two elite rugby tournaments already under way.

    – RWC: Where to watch matches in the UAE
    – RWC: Japan's upset proof expansionism is working

The dates they have their eyes on are November 12 and 13, when they welcome some of the region’s best schools to Abu Dhabi for the annual BSAK rugby tournament, before taking to the field again for the Dubai Sevens from December 3 to 5.

Besides training, the final squad which will participate at the Dubai Sevens, will also travel to Hong Kong at the end of next month for a week training camp.

“Training is well under way for the BSAK rugby tournament and the Dubai Sevens,” said Johnny Coombs, head of PE at BSAK.

“We’ll make sure our students are well prepared for those tournaments because obviously those are two big competitions for us. It will be tough competition but there’s still time to work on our weaknesses and strategies.”

But it is not just rugby that BSAK are targeting success in. The Abu Dhabi-based school will be vying for glory in football, cricket, swimming and netball with the new season set to begin from next Monday.

“We are gearing up for a big season at BSAK and the pupils cannot wait to get their seasons started,” said Coombs, who arrived in the capital from China in August.

“We had a great turn-out in the sports trials which we held earlier this month and there’s a general good buzz around the school.”

Coombs will be supported by 15 PE teachers, who will be in charge of different sports and age groups throughout the season.

“And with BSAK renowned for its sporting success and participation, Coombs is keen to keep that trend going.

“I have a vision for the school to strive for excellence in every area of PE and sport,” he said. “From our elite teams to the provision of our foundation classes, the aim is to offer our students the finest possible environment to enjoy and succeed in sport.

“Hopefully we can participate in the international COBIS or BSME Games as that will help the students gain international exposure. “This season, children can test themselves against the best in the UAE and there’s a real buzz and excitement from the students.”
