Arab No1 Malek Jaziri enjoyed a dream debut at Roland Garros as the Tunisian beat Philipp Petzchner 6-3, 7-5, 7-6 (9/7) to advance to the second round of the French Open.
The win ensures the 28-year-old, who broke into the world’s top 100 for the first time earlier this year, has now matched his best ever showing in Grand Slams after reach the same stage in last year’s US Open.
The world No94 proved too strong for his German opponent who has endured a miserable start to his 2012, winning just three times in 12 matches which has saw him slip to No98 in the world from a career-high No35 in 2009.
Jaziri had told Sport360° in the build up to his match on Court 10 that he was “excited” to be making his bow at Roland Garros and was “ready for the challenge”. And so it proved as he outgunned his opponent with some impressive shot-making throughout.
