  • Huge year: Murray aims for a successful 2015 season after a dip in form this year.

Andy Murray has shocked fans by confirming his place in the Mubadala World Tennis Championship (MWTC) in Abu Dhabi.

The Scotsman was initally a doubt for the event as he is participating in the Hopman Cup in Perth (partnering Heather Watson) starting January 4, 2015 – a day following the conclusion of the January 1-3 Mubadala event.

He has never previously played in both exhibition tournaments in the same season but 2015 is going to be different.

This will be the fourth time Murray has competed at the MWTC after winning the event in 2009 – its inaugural year.

Murray joins world No1 Novak Djokovic, world No2 Rafael Nadal, and world No4 Stanislas Wawrinka, as the fourth confirmed player in the six-star line-up.

Speaking after his US Open campaign, Murray said: “I played some good tennis, but I think I can do better. The Grand Slams are over for this year now and I’m already looking forward to the start of next season which for me will be in Abu Dhabi at the Mubadala World Tennis Championship.

"It’s a symbolic start date this year on January 1st, representing the first tournament of the season and the first matches of the year.

"The line-up so far is incredibly strong and after the winter break we should all be back, firing on all cylinders which is going to mean exciting tennis for the fans in Abu Dhabi.”

“With players like Rafa and Novak I know just how hard it is going to be but we only get better by testing ourselves against the best.

"Last year I really felt the support of the fans and I’m hoping everyone will come out on New Year’s Day to back us again.”

The unique combination of a ‘winner takes all’ prize of $250,000, the world’s best players and a Championship format that is the equivalent of a Grand Slam quarter-final, guarantee explosive performances and attacking tennis to thrill crowds on centre court.

In addition to the sensational displays of tennis, the Mubadala World Tennis Championship boasts exciting off-court action in the Tennis Village, where players can be found coaching tennis clinics and signing autographs.

Tickets for January’s Mubadala World Tennis Championship are on sale at www.ticketmaster.ae and all Virgin Megastore outlets across the UAE or by calling 800 TM UAE (86 823).
