  • By land and sea: Show off your triathlon abilities in various distances and categories in Dubai.

Race ME open their JLL series with the Roy Nasr Memorial Triathlon next month and with few places remaining, budding triathletes are being encouraged not to miss out in what will be an emotional day.

So far about 300 people have signed up for the event on Saturday, October 17 from 06:45 at Jebel Ali Golf Resort and Hotel in Dubai, to honour the life of the Lebanese.

Nasr, co-founder of Tri Dubai Triathlon club and Race ME, was killed by a drunk driver while riding near Safa Park, Dubai on September 6, 2013. Now in its third edition, the event has gone from strength to strength attracting more than 1,000 participants.

And this year’s triathlon looks set to be another success.

“We’ve had around 300 people sign up and that is a great number considering there is still more than four weeks to go until the event. But with safety a huge priority, there are only 75 places remaining,” said co-organiser Paul Venn.

Open to 11-year-olds and above, there are different categories for adults and juniors, no matter what your background experience and ability are.

Super Sprint consists of a 375km swim, 10km bike ride followed by a 2.5km run. For those who are more advanced, then the Sprint options are available, swimming for 750m, a 20km bike ride and a 5km run.

Having competed at the 2006 Asian Games and the 2010 Ironman 70.3 World Championship in Florida, Nasr regularly found himself on the podium at races, claiming a bronze medal at the World Age Group Championships in China in 2011.

More the merrier: About 300 triathletes have already registered for the popular event.

When not training or racing, Nasr often visited schools and colleges in Dubai to promote a healthy lifestyle and to encourage children to set themselves goals in life and work hard to achieve their dreams, whatever they might be. And given his pedigree, Venn said it’s a chance to be part of an emotional day.

“It’s a race in Roy Nasr’s name,” he said.

“He set up Race ME events and Tri Dubai and it’s in honour of his name. “I wouldn’t be surprised if it gets sold out as it usually does every year.

"It’s a fitting opener for what has become an increasingly busy season and there are a lot of races in the region, not just in the UAE. This is a great way to start the season.

“If you’re looking to challenge yourself and want to do your first race in a nice, friendly and safe community environment then there are no better races than this one. The venue is just perfect for beginners and advanced athletes and the atmosphere is great.”
