When Dean Ambrose and Chris Jericho come head-to-head at Extreme Rules next Monday morning (UAE time), a new match will be added to the long list of WWE stipulations.
Essentially this is a steel cage match but with a variety of weapons dangling from the top of the structure.
Unlike a steel cage fight, neither Ambrose nor Jericho can win by escaping the cage with only pinfall or submission securing a win.
It promises to deliver great intrigue to the event with the WWE Universe excited to see how it plays out.
This was also the case when we were first introduced to Hell in a Cell and such instances have gone on to define wrestlers as their go-to matchup, almost a home-tie when things need to be drawn to a dramatic, violent conclusion.
Some have also shaped the landscape of WWE beyond single Superstars and become permanent fixtures across shows, even creating pay-per-views on the back of a single match’s attraction.
Others, like the Belfast Brawl, have slipped by the wayside for obvious reasons.
Whether or not the Asylum match at Extreme Rules catches on will very much depend on how the two wrestlers are able to sell the fight and only time will tell if it’s a hit or not.
In the meantime, Sport360 decided to look at five of our favourite WWE matches borne out of characters and rivalries from years gone by.
HELL IN A CELL
When Hell in a Cell was first introduced to the WWE back in 1997 few could have predicted just how much it would catch on.
Since then there have been 33 Hell in a Cell matches and over the past six years it has become a standalone pay-per-view on the WWE’s calendar.
It will always be associated with The Undertaker who has featured in 14 of the Hell in a Cell matches, Triple H the next most frequent occupant of the ‘Demonic Structure’ with nine HIAC outings.
TABLES, LADDERS AND CHAIRS
Another of the WWE’s most successful matches, the moment the jaw-dropping rivalry between The Hardy Boyz, Dudley Boyz and Edge & Christian came to a head via their respective weapons of choice, the appetite for TLC has been insatiable.
That first match at SumemrSlam in 2000 seemed impossible to top but a year later the three antagonists brought the house down at WrestleMania X-Seven, paving the way for what is now a staple of the WWE diet.
There have been 17 TLC matches to date and, just like HIAC, the past seven years have seen pay-per-views led by this stipulation.
BURIED ALIVE MATCH
Another match built around the character of The Undertaker and one that brings back memories of In Your House PPVs watched on grainy VCRs.
Images of Stone Cold Steve Austin, Mankind and The Rock facing ‘Taker atop a dirt mound and swinging shovels around are a throwback to a golden time for the WWE.
Only five matches have ever taken place since it was first brought to screens in 1996, The Undertaker winning two and losing three.
PUNJABI PRISON MATCH
This was even more short-lived than the Buried Alive matches but the sheer sight of the Punjabi Prison is a spectacular one to behold.
Associated with the Great Khali and referencing his Punjab roots, only two matches have ever taken place inside the bamboo cage.
Khali was actually pulled from the first one against The Undertaker (who else?) in 2006 on health grounds but went on to face Batista a year later at No Mercy, a match he would go on to lose.
INFERNO MATCH
There’s definitely a trend here, the Inferno Match another associated with The Undertaker but more through his on-screen sibling Kane than anything else.
The Big Red Machine came to our screens in dramatic fashion to face his “brother” who, as part of the storyline, had burned down the family home as a child, killing his parents and leaving Kane with a face full of charred scars – nicely setting up the 1998 showdown at Unforgiven.
Kane has featured in all four of WWE’s Inferno matches, won when you set your opponent on fire, but has only been victorious once against Montel Vontavious Porter at Armageddon in 2006.
