  • Drew McIntyre and Brock Lesnar has a high-octane encounter at WrestleMania 36

The second night of WrestleMania 36 took place on Sunday.

The event was held behind closed doors at the company’s Performance Centre in Florida due to the Coronavirus Pandemic.

It is the first time WWE’s biggest show of the year has been split into two nights.

Here is a rundown on what took place in the second eight matches booked to be held during the weekend.

Charlotte Flair defeated Rhea Ripley to win the NXT Women’s Championship

How the match was won After a physical match, which went just over 20 minutes, Flair made Ripley tap out with the figure four submission lock.

Talking point It was a historic night for NXT. It was the first time a title from the brand had been defended on a WrestleMania card and highlights how serious WWE are in pushing it, and their Wednesday evening duel with AEW.

The big winner Flair reminded everyone that she is arguably the best women’s talent in WWE right now.

She produced another excellent WrestleMania performance, full of charisma and physicality.

The down point It was a shame Ripley had to lose, given her strong run since moving to competing in the United States regularly from NXT UK in the summer of 2019.

This feels like the start of a feud rather than a culmination so there is time yet for Ripley to stand tall in this rivalry.

Verdict A strong opening match to the second night. Ripley underlines her promise for the future while Flair adds another memorable night to her already successful career.

    Aleister Black defeats Bobby Lashley

How the match was won Lashley was in the ascendancy, but was distracted by his on-screen wife Lana’s attempt to give him advice, allowing Black to capitalise and win with the Black Mass kick.

Talking point The first seeds of a split between Lashley and Lana, with the former clearly blaming his ‘wife’ for the defeat post-match judging by the unhappy expression on his face.

The big winner This was a throwaway match, with no build, but Black should take encouragement that WWE seem committed to keeping him strong and booking him as a force to be reckoned with.

The down point How far Lashley has fallen. He was seen as a creditable future opponent for Brock Lesnar in 2018 when he returned to WWE but now even being in a top midcard feud looks a stretch for a man with no momentum.

Verdict Short at seven minutes but did its job in making Black look good.

    Otis pinned Dolph Ziggler

How the match was won Ziggler, with Sonya Deville at ringside, was in charge before an angry Mandy Rose marched out.

She attacked Deville, retribution for finding out on SmackDown her tag team partner had manipulated things into ruining her Valentine’s date with Otis.

She then low-blowed Ziggler, setting up Otis to pin him after hitting the Caterpillar. Post-match the two kissed in a pay-off to a romance that has been built up for the past four months.

Talking point The split of Rose and Deville as tag partners. It had been hinted for a while but now the trigger has been pulled. It will be fascinating to see how they fare as singles acts, once their inevitable feud happens.

The big winner Otis has been one of WWE’s breakout stars and while this would have been better with a live crowd, having him prevail, and get the girl in storyline terms, is a big boost for him.

The down point This moment of Otis and Rose getting together had been four months in the making and it was a pity there was no crowd to sell the enormity of the moment.

Verdict A happy ending to one of SmackDown’s main programmes of late, and the potential for fun in the months ahead with the unlikely pairing of Otis and Rose is high.

Edge defeated Randy Orton in a Last Man Standing match

    HIS TERMS!! @edgeratedr #WrestleMania

A post shared by WWE (@wwe) on

How the match was won After a long match, which lasted 36 minutes and saw the two men fight all around the Performance Centre, Edge stood tall as after taking Orton down with a chokehold then hit a Conchairto on his opponent to ensure he could not meet the 10 count.

Talking point Edge showed remarkable stamina, for his first match in nine years, and it was a great return to action for the 11-time world champion.

The big winner Both men stepped up here. Orton was the vicious heel, while Edge was the heroic face, looking for vengenace, and they played their respective roles well and with believable emotion.

The down point It was too long. With no crowd to sell the drama, and some beatdowns back stage being repetitive, this could have done with being 15 minutes shorter.

Verdict A fine return for Edge. Going so long, with no crowd to bounce off, was ill-advised, but a fine revenge story reaches a satisfactory conclusion.

Rob Gronkowski is the new WWE 24/7 champion

What happened: A brief interlude saw Mojo Rawley, who had won the 24/7 title from R-Truth on Saturday, be chased to the ring by other WWE talent.

Gronkowski jumped from his hosting position on to the other superstars and pinned Rawley.

A surprising result for the former NFL star, used to winning Super Bowls with the New England Patriots

The Street Profits retained the Raw Tag Team titles against Angel Garza and Austin Theory

How the match was won Montez Ford got the pin on Austin Theory with a springboard frogsplash to ensure a successful title defence for the champions.

Talking point The absence of United States champion Andrade, who was injured, led to this match being thrown together last minute, so it is no surprise it was one of the shortest matches of the weekend.

The big winner The Street Profits have a lot of potential to become one of the biggest tag teams in WWE and having them go over emphatically here emphasised that.

The down point This lacked drama due to the fact the match-up circumstances meant there was no build and therefore little chance of a title switch.

Verdict A match unlikely to live in the memory but the right team went over.

Bayley retained the SmackDown Women’s Championship in a fatal five-way against Lacey Evans, Sasha Banks, Naomi and Tamina

How the match was won After Tamina, Naomi and Banks had been eliminated it was down to Bayley and Evans.

But Banks returned to attack Evans from behind and that set up Bayley to get the pin.

Talking point This was as much an angle setting up the inevitable feud between Bayley and Banks.

The two friends worked closely for much of proceedings but miscommunication set up Banks’s elimination, at the hands of Evans.

But she returned to help the champion and handed the belt to her post-match. However, the expression of both women hinted there is much more ahead to this story, especially as Banks glanced repeatedly at the title.

The big winner All five women were given moments to shine. Tamina was made to look strong as it took all four of her rivals hitting their finishers to put her down, while Evans was in charge before Banks returned to distract her.

The down point None. Solid action, did not overstay its welcome and developed Bayley v Sasha Banks as the leading programme on SmackDown going forward.

Verdict Multi-wrestler matches at WrestleMania can sometimes be troublesome. But this was fine and achieved its goals.

Bray Wyatt defeated John Cena in a FireFly Fun House match

How the match was won This was not really a match, rather a series of skits as Wyatt looked to play mind games with Cena. With his opponent distracted, Wyatt’s The Fiend persona appeared and put the 16-time champion out with the Mandible Claw.

Talking point The WWE took the opportunity, with no audience in attendance, to do something very different.

Like with the Boneyard match on Saturday, this was WWE trying something new and this was effectively Wyatt breaking Cena down psychologically as they revisited some of his many career highs and lows as well as that of wrestling’s yesteryear with nostalgic recalls of WWE and WCW.

The big winner Both men. Wyatt was excellent as the master puppeteer manipulating things, but major props to Cena for selling the confusion of seeing his life reflected in front of him in increasingly surreal fashion.

Plus any time you see the Vince McMahon puppet on TV is a win.

The down point This might not have appealed to everyone but the WWE took the chance, with the Coronavirus pandemic changing their original plans, to be creative and try something very different to their usual fare.

Verdict Bold stuff from WWE. This segment will be remembered, and analysed, for a long time ahead and both protagonists deserve credit for their roles in something so unique.

Drew McIntyre defeated Brock Lesnar to win the WWE World Heavyweight Championship

How the match was won After surviving three F5s from Lesnar, McIntyre turned the tide with three Claymore Kicks in a row to get the pin and become the first Briton to hold a WWE world title.

The match lasted four minutes and 35 seconds.

Talking point The WWE pulled the trigger on McIntyre. There had been fears his crowning moment may be postponed due to the Coronavirus, but WWE have given McIntyre his WrestleMania moment and the chance to establish himself at the top of the card.

The big winner Both men. Lesnar again showed just how ferocious he can be while demonstrating his willingness to do right by the business for the right opponent.

He has put McIntyre over massively and now it is up to WWE and the Scotsman to build on that.

The down point A slightly longer match, with a bit more drama would have been nice, but this worked for what it needed to be.

Verdict McIntyre’s big night. The Scotsman’s emotional reaction post-match showed what it meant to him, even with no crowd, and it was a fitting climax to the show.
