Indian cricket legend Rahul Dravid has the honour of being the highest run-scorer in the history of Test cricket between India and New Zealand. The 43-year-old scored 1659 runs in 15 matches at a sublime average of 63.80 against the Blackcaps.

Two other batsmen – Sachin Tendulkar and Brendon McCullum – have more than 1,000 Test runs to their name in clashes between the two sides. Tendulkar has 1595 runs at an average of  46.91 against New Zealand which is well below his overall Test average of 53.78.

On the other hand, McCullum’s average of 68 against India is much greater than his career average of 38.64. McCullum’s heroic triple century when the last time the two sides met will not be forgotten by many for a long time to come. New Zealand were trailing by 246 runs after the first innings, and looked all set for a defeat, when McCullum produced the first 300+ score by a New Zealander in the history of Test cricket.

The two cricketers rounding off the top five are both from New Zealand – Graham Dowling and Bert Sutcliffe. Dowling interestingly scored three Test centuries and all of them came against India. Sutcliffe, who is considered by many as one of New Zealand’s finest cricketers scored 885 runs at an average of 68.07 against India.

The other five who make up the top ten include Virender Sehwag (883 runs), VVS Laxman (818 runs), John Wright (804 runs), Mohammad Azharuddin (796 runs) and Mark Burgess (725 runs).

Vinoo Mankad and Dilip Sardesai, with averages of 100+, would have loved to play more than 4 and 3 Tests against the Kiwis respectively.

Among the batsmen who are still active, Ross Taylor is the top-scorer in Test matches between the two countries. The Wellington-born cricketer has scored 659 runs against India from 9 Tests.

Current Indian Test skipper Virat Kohli has enjoyed playing against New Zealand so far. He has 426 runs to his name in just 4 Tests at an average of 85.20.
