Which match lives longest in your memory?

Afghanistan beat West Indies by six runs on Sunday to provide one of the biggest shocks in World T20 history.

Also of note are Hong Kong’s stunning win over hosts Bangladesh in 2014 as well as Zimbabwe upsetting the odds against Australia at the inaugural tournament.

2007

ZIMBABWE beat Australia

In the first ever edition of the tournament, it took just four matches to witness an early shock.

Chasing 139 for victory, Zimbabwe chased down the total in Cape Town with five wickets to spare and just one ball remaining.

Brendan Taylor made an unbeaten 60 for his side, taking them to the win.

BANGLADESH beat West Indies

One game later, Bangladesh took another big name as the West Indies failed to cope with the Tigers.

Although this result would surprise few these days, in 2007 Bangladesh were very much a side still coming to terms with life at the top table.

Set 165 to win Bangladesh made light work of the total, winning with two overs to spare.

2009

IRELAND beat Bangladesh

Two years later it was Bangladesh who were on the wrong side of a beating by a lesser known outfit as Ireland romped past them in Nottingham.

Having restricted Bangladesh to 137 the Irish lost just four wickets in reply as they won in the 19th over of the match.

Kevin O’Brien was the hero that day, carting the Bangladesh attack around the park in a 17-ball innings of 39 that included 4 fours and 2 sixes.

NETHERLANDS beat England

At none other than Lord’s, the Home of Cricket, England were brought to their knees by the Netherlands in stunning fashion.

The Dutch were up against it after being set 163 for victory but crossed the line with the last ball of the contest.

Six down, Ryan ten Doeschate’s unbeaten 22 saw his side home.

2014

HONG KONG beat Bangladesh

Hong Kong stunned tournament hosts Bangladesh with an historic win of their own at the last edition of the tournament.

The game went right to the wire before Hong Kong’s Haseeb Amjad sent Abdur Razzak into the stands to win the game with a six.

Just two balls remained in the match and Hong Kong came remarkably close to knocking Bangladesh out of the tournament, their net run-rate the only saviour.

NETHERLANDS beat England

Possibly the most convincing and shocking matches on this list, the Netherlands proved they had a liking for playing England once again.

Having posted a rather modest looking 133-5 from their 20 overs little was expected of the Dutch against their “superior” opponents.

That proved to be a dangerous line of thought, however, as the Netherlands bowled out England for 88 in reply and secured their biggest scalp to date.

AFGHANISTAN beat West Indies

Afghanistan’s shock victory in their final World T20 match over early tournament favourites West Indies adds further substance to the associate nations’ calls for more regular game time against Test-playing nations.

The Asians defeated defeated Darren Sammy’s men by six runs to ensure that they leave India with a (fully-deserved) victory under their belts.

The result does not change the outcome of Group 1 with the Caribbean side still finishing as winners, but Afghanistan’s energetic and competent displays must now be rewarded with more ICC support to ensure this does not become a one-off.
