Australia on top.

Steve Smith registered his 19th Test century as Australia had a good day with the bat after electing to bat first in the third Test against India on Thursday.

At one point, Australia seemed to be in a bit of a bother, having lost four wickets with just 140 runs on the board. That was when Glenn Maxwell joined Smith in the middle and the duo have put on 159 unbeaten runs for the fifth wicket so far.

Maxwell brought up his first Test half-century and is batting on 82 at the end of play on day one. On the other hand, Smith is unbeaten on 117 and looks good for a really big score.

Earlier in the day, fast bowler Umesh Yadav picked up two wickets with some superb reverse swing.

For Australia, Matt Renshaw once again showed why he is rated so highly as he looked fluent during his knock of 44.

Apart from the scorecard, there was another worry for the Indian team as captain Virat Kohli was forced off the park after an injury to his right shoulder during the second session. He sat out the rest of the day.

BRIEF SCORES

Australia 299/4 [Smith 117*, Maxwell 82*, Umesh 2/63] vs India.
