Kenya’s Faith Kipyegon produced a startling last-lap sprint to outpace favourite Genzebe Dibaba of Ethiopia to win the Olympic women’s 1500m gold on Tuesday.

Kipyegon clocked 4min 08.92sec after her burst over the last 250 metres, world record holder Dibaba taking silver in 4:10.27.

American Jennifer Simpson claimed bronze in 4:10.53.

Elsewhere, Omar McLeod produced a flawless performance to win the gold medal in the Olympic 110m hurdles.

McLeod raced home in 13.05sec after smoothly clearing each of his 10 hurdles as the battle for silver and bronze unfolded behind him.

Cuba-born Spaniard Orlando Ortega took silver in 13.17sec with Dimitri Bascou of France third in 13.24sec.Meanwhile, In the men’s high jump, Canada’s Derek Drouin beat a quality field to add the Olympic crown to his world title after a cliff-hanger of a final in Rio.

Drouin cleared 2.38 metres in Tuesday’s competition, edging Qatari Mutaz Barshim into the silver medal spot to become Canada’s first Olympic high jump champion since 1932.OLYMPICS TRACKER-01

Barshim, the world indoor silver medallist, took silver after posting a height of 2.36 while Ukraine’s Bohdan Bondarenko, who was runner-up to Drouin at last year’s world championships, took bronze with 2.33m.

In table tennis, Li Xiaoxia, Liu Shiwen and Ding Ning combined to win the women’s gold to keep China on target for their third consecutive Games cleansweep of titles.

The Chinese women swept aside Germany’s Han Ying, Shan Xiaona, and Petrisse Solja 3-0 to add another gold to the table tennis superpower’s wins last week in the men’s and women’s singles.

Earlier in the day, Usain Bolt took another step in his quest for an unprecedented sprint “triple triple” when he safely negotiated the first round of the 200m.

Justin Gatlin, who won silver behind Bolt in the 100m, also looked comfortable as he won his heat in 20.42sec.
