IN PICS: Past 10 Sports Personality of the Year Award winners

The annual BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award takes place every December, and commemorates athletes, who have achieved great feats during the calendar year through a public voting system.

In 2015, Andy Murray won the award for the second time after Lewis Hamilton had clinched the same in 2014.

Andy Murray: Having helped lead Great Britain to a first Davis Cup title in 79 years, he was crowned the 2015 winner.

Lewis Hamilton: Following his second Formula One world title triumph, the Brit was voted SPOTY in 2014.

Andy Murray: After ending a 77-year wait for a men’s Wimbledon title, Murray won his first SPOTY in 2013.

Bradley Wiggins: After becoming the first British cyclist to win the Tour de France Wiggins scooped the 2012 gong.

Mark Cavendish: He was the first British cyclist to ever win the points classification in the TdF leading to his 2011 award.

Tony McCoy: His 2010 Grand National success at his 15th try saw him become the first jockey to win SPOTY.

Ryan Giggs: The 2009 winner after becoming the most decorated player in English football with an 11th EPL medal.

Joe Calzaghe: The Welsh champ rubber stamped a glorious 2007 with defeat of Mikkel Kessler to get his SPOTY nod.

Chris Hoy: With three golds at the 2008 Games he became Scotland’s most successful Olympian ever. Zara Phillips After winning the 2006 Eventing World Championship, she followed her mum in winning SPOTY.
