  • What do footballers such as Jonathan Greening, Florent Sinama Pongolle and Valerio Fiori have in common? Other than the fact that most neutral fans would struggle to remember them, they all have Champions League winners’ medals.

Greening, the former Manchester United player, said he felt like a “fraud” for receiving a winners’ medal, as he played a grand total of zero minutes in Europe during United’s Champions League success in 1998/99, the Treble season. But many players have been awarded with a medal without making any significant contributions to their team’s triumph.

The list also includes players most fans wouldn’t expect to have won the Champions League, such as former Liverpool goalkeeper Scott Carson. That’s right, the error-prone keeper best known for his howler against Croatia that led to England failing to qualify for Euro 2008, has a winners’ medal in his cabinet, as he was on the Liverpool books during the Reds’ 2004/05 win.
