  • Arsenal boss Unai Emery has backed captain Granit Xhaka amid criticism for some of his mistakes this season.

The Switzerland international was confirmed as Arsenal skipper, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Hector Bellerin, Alexandre Lacazette and Mesut Ozil following in the pecking order.

Xhaka was jeered by a section of fans during Arsenal’s 3-2 win over Aston Villa but Emery confirmed he has his full support.

“But, really, I trust (and) I believe in him. He is a good man, a good professional, a good player. Some times he made a mistake, yes, really, he made (mistakes),” he said.

The most important thing is to analyse, to learn and to correct those mistakes and the future is going to say to us (whether he does that). But, our challenge and his challenge is (to) change that opinion, and above all with personality, improve each match, improving and giving us his help every time (he plays) and the first match is on Sunday in Manchester.”
