  • Running the batsman out for backing up at the non-striker’s end has often caused controversy in international cricket and it was the no different when Kapil Dev did it to Peter Kirsten during an ODI between South Africa and India on this day in 1992.

Dev had previously warned Kirsten about backing up too much earlier in the tour, and decided to go ahead with the run-out in the second ODI at Port Elizabeth. Kirsten was on 5 when the incident occurred.

Kirsten was clearly furious and later fined 50% of his match fee for refusing to leave the field. Despite this dismissal, South Africa would go on to win the game by six wickets.

This mode of dismissal is usually referred to as ‘Mankading’, as India’s Vinoo Mankad was the first bowler to use it in an international match against Australia’s Bill Brown at Sydney in 1947.
