And she was forced to come from a set down to beat her sixth-ranked opponent.

Sharapova beating Kvitova in front of her home fans in Prague, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 to put Russia just a one win away from a first Fed Cup title since 2008.

Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova had the chance to gift that title to her team when she faced Karolina Pliskova in the second singles match of the day.

However, with the backing of the home crowd, Pliskova delivered the crucial victory in straight sets 6-3, 6-4.

The result meaning that all would come down to the final match of the day.

A doubles encounter between Pavlyuchenkova and Vesnina for Russia against Pliskova and Barbora Strycova for the Czech Republic.

The Russian duo won the first set 6-4 to put themselves in the driving seat.

But for the second time on the day, the Czech Republic produced a comeback spurred on by the home faithful.

Pliskova and Barbora Strycova fighting to win the next two sets and the match in two hours and nine minutes.

The 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 win meaning the Czech Republic seals its fourth Fed Cup win in five years, and the first to go down to the final match since 2011.
